Sericin (CAS# 60650-88-6, 60650-89-7) is a natural polymer and protein isolated from the silkworm, Bombyx Mori. It is one of the two main constituents of silk, along with fibroin. Sericin acts as a protective protein and glue-like substance that binds two silk fibroin filaments together to form silk yarn. It is highly moisturizing and is used in formulating creams and hair products for its moisturizing and conditioning properties.
As an anti-aging active ingredient, sericin increases the levels of hydroxyproline and hydration in skin cells, leading to improved skin elasticity and reduced wrinkles.
It also stimulates collagen production, cell regeneration, and wound healing. In cleansers, it helps minimize irritation. Additionally, as a skincare active, sericin prevents Trans-Epidermal water loss by creating a smooth film on the skin and has skin-brightening properties.
