Stearyl alcohol is a multifunctional fatty alcohol derived from coconut and/or palm oil. Like most high HLB emulsifiers, it is multifunctional. It functions as an emulsifier or co-emulsifier in oil-in-water formulations, and as an emollient. Stearyl alcohol also belongs to the viscosity modifiers class of ingredients. It helps increase the viscosity (thicken) of formulations and creates soft, velvety, smooth, and rich products. Compared to cetyl alcohol, stearyl alcohol produces softer, creamier, and whiter products. It helps smooth and detangle hair and traps moisture by producing a film on the skin.
